Song Choice

As I said I was planning on telling you what song I have chosen to do this week and .... I have ... The song that I am going to use for this preliminary task is NIGHCLUBBING - IGGY POP so we'll see how it turns out.

Shoes.....

A relatively major part of my video or should i say the preliminary video is going to have shoes in it and this theory of shoes can be taken in two different contexts either the Forrest Gump motto of "You can tell a lot about a person based on their shoes where they've been where their going." Or the second school of thought is "Don't judge a person until you've walked two moons in their moccasins." So this is up to the audience to decide what the underlying message is....

Early Stages ...

What I have realized about media is that problems seem to be around every corner and so another ugly problem has reared it's ugly head. What I had planned to do was to get some of the basic initial footage shot last night (Wednesday) but when I took the camera home on tuesday night I realized that I didn't have a means of charging the dead battery in the camera so I am going to have to start shooting tonight. This is going to mean that I need to do almost the whole thing tonight as my camera man is going to be unavailable to assist me over the weekend and next week so another challeng has come up....

Initial Planning

So as we have not done any practical work for the past couple of months we are now going to set out to make a short video to get us back into practice. This video is supposed to be about a minute long and it is an edited minute.

At this point it is important to tap into the research and see what the outcome was what the audience would expect and how I am going to put my own spin on a piece of music and how it comes across to the audience.

For this task I am most likely going to draw inspiration from the Flourescent Adolescent video by the Arctic Monkeys - this idea is kind of a video that really seems to have nothing to do with the song but it still has a relevance to it in a weird way. It shows either the bands personality or it shows how they view the song how the band guess that the audience will interpret the music.

What I am planning to do with this video is to set up what the next full video will look like but in a way I am also going to try to not give to much away.

Some of the songs that I am thinking of using are Night Clubbing - Iggy Pop
Or possibly the Arctic Monkeys new song "Do I Wanna Know" another thought is to use the song "Headfirst slide into copperstown on a bad bet" by Fall Out Boy. So the song that I chose to use is still a little up in the air right now but I will pin it down in the next day or two.

Narrative Theory Notes - To Keep in mind during mock video shoot.....

Narrative Theory :

This is something that can be quantified because everything has it's own story.
The idea is about process a caual relationship which is a combination of plot and story.
It is also the balancing of what the audience see hear and assume.

Narrative Stucture:

This is usually linear but can be non linear

Most important thing to remember is that narrative theory applies to existing work it is not applied to work that is in the process of being created.

The work is always about change the idea that something happens becuase in a story even though it can seem as though nothing is happening something is usually happening.

A narrative has a beginning middle and an end.
It is also important to remember that you have to give the audience what they expect something that is familiar to them.

Fall Out Boy Sugar, We're Going Down concept version - Video Analysis

http://www.vevo.com/watch/fall-out-boy/sugar-were-goin-down-concept-version/USIV30500074?source=instantsearch#/watch/fall-out-boy/sugar-were-goin-down-concept-version/USIV30500074?source=instantsearch

This video like several of the other videos in the alternative rock punk genre has a heavy performance
element it also has a kind of love story element to it which is common when the song could be described as a love song. As this is the concept version it has a strange narrative to it which is about a boy who has horns and falls in love with a girl and her father is not happy about the two of their relationship.

0:01 The opening is an establishing shot of a residence and a field there are some houses on the boarder of a field.

0:09 There is then a change in the shot which is another establishing shot of a hill in the corner of both shots at opposite ends there is a tree which could be seen as a kind of motif for the video. Or it is just a point of referenece so the shots still make sense.

0:10 Within the establishing shot there appears at the bottom of the screen a pair of antlers which creates intrigue in the audience and so they begin to wonder how that happened and how does this relate to the song.

0:15 Here there is a profile of the drummer shown this seems to be a consitient feature of music vidoes that when the video is just beging the director chooses not to show the whole band but to kind of build up the image of the band by introducing the singers or performers one at a time. This was also used in the Relient K video and it shows the audience that the song is about to begin

0:20 At this point in the video the main character of the video is introduced which sets him up as the main point of the concept version of the video this also creates a seperation between the band and the story

0:23 Here the full band is introduced which shows the main performance element of the video the promotional element this is Fall Out Boy and this is intercut with the concept throughout the video

0:34 Many bands use the videos to give their fans an idea of the sense of humour that they have and this is what FOB do by showing young children as a threat or menacing

0:42 There is then a close up of the little boy who threw the pants on the main characters antlers and it shows his finger which is blotted out which signifies a rude gesture what this could show is that there are profanities and it could be a deeper message such as the corruption of youth

0:48 There is another in a series of cuts cut to the band who are shown in a mid shot and it is the three main musicians in the band

0:52 There is then a kite shown which is in the shape of a bird all these shots are setting up an idea that is developed further on in the video the bird in the sky could be a symbol of hope.

1:01 Here it shows audiences that there was hope as the kite crashes on the main character and a girl comes to help untangle him this is the establishment or set up of the love story the use of close ups on their faces helps to show that there is a connection between the two characters and that they are happy to see each other promoting positive connatations which could be to reflect the song

1:06 There is a close up on the lead singer agian showing the heavy performance element that is typical of these kinds of videos

1:11 Here there is a tracking shot used showing the boy walking the girl home which shows that there is a build up in the relationship and would be like a montage of their relationship if it had been a full lenght feature

1:20 This is where a danger element is introduced and the girl is grabbed by her father this also helps to build up tension in both the music video and also in the song

1:31 There is a close up on the fathers face but he is at the left side of the screen which shows that there is danger or evil about him and that he should be regared.

1:35 The main characters face is shown in close up as the audience guess that he has been stood up on his date and there is a feeling of sympathy that is provoked in the audience this video is unusual because it tells a full story while showing the band

1:42 There is then a section where the boy goes into a shead and tries to cut off his antlers

1:52 The action is agian intercut as is the whole video with the band performance and the girl runs in at the last minute

1:52 - 3:09 Here there is a montage of the two the boy and the girl and a montage of their relationships and what they get up to but the montage is cut with prolonged band performance

3:09 Here the father tries to shoot the boy with a bow and arrow

3:16 There is a shot of the band and the man the father gets run over by a truck before he can shoot the boy as the boy walks over to check on him he finds that the father has deer feet

The video ends with ammenesty between all the characters get on because they have found common ground.

Peter Gabriel Sledgehammer - Video Analysis

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OJWJE0x7T4Q

Peter Gabriel Sledgehammer

This video was made in 1987 and it won several awards it won nine MTV awards and a Brit award and in 2011 it was made the most played music video in the history of MTV.
This video is one that seems to have steamed from quite a simple idea but it is so cleverly made and unusually for a music video it had special effects like the use of CGI. Similarly to Franz Ferdinand there is this opening with an eye and showing how it dilates and then how it goes small again. It is also slightly similar to the Relient K video with the use of stop motion or stop gap film.

0:03 The video opens with a black screen and the word Sledgehammer written on the background.

0:11 There is a fade to black as the music begins

0:13 There are random dots of light on a black background

0:16 Here there is an increase in the number of the dots but also there is movement and the camera kind of pans across all the lights that are used.

0:18 There is a larger shape made out of the lights

0:19 Here one single light takes up the whole of the screen

0:22 To add to the random pattern of events that the audience has seen there seems to be an animation of something which resembles sperm and it moves about the screen

0:27 Then there is light like lava that is moving around the screen

0:32 Here there are several pictures shown in a kind of spitfire sequence

0:35 There is a focus on the liquid that is moving around and it looks like lava that is moving around through rocks or something

0:39 A close up of an eye appears and it is closed then it opens and there is a sequence of the pupil being small then big then small again

0:41 The camera moves to show a finger that is tapping on a forehead near the hairline all these movements are in line with the bass line or the rhythm of the song.

0:43 The camera moves to focus on the mouth which moves from a smile to a frown

0:44 The earlobe is then shown in close up and it moves up and down

0:47 There is focus on the eye again and it is shown opening and closing

0:49 Here the whole face is moving but the audience is not shown the singers mouth

0:51 The camera then reveals the mouth and it moves to show the teeth and then covers up the teeth

0:53 Here the mouth opens and the singing starts so there is a heavy performance element because the mouth is always moving and showing the words are created

0:54 There is a zoom out which again shows the whole face which is continually moving

1:01 Here there is a black background and a train track encircles the face which is kind of like the moon in George Melies A journey to the moon film

1:03 The lyrics are "steam train" and a train appears on the tracks so it is kind of literal and physical representation of the song

1:05 The tracks and the train move higher up the face as if going up different stages

1:12 Here the train tracks move out of the shot

1:13 The lyrics now say "airplane" and a paper airplane encircles the face

1:17 As the plane moves out of the shot it drags across a blue background and the face is painted blue then a sequence of clouds move across the background and the face

1:21 There is a new background and the singer is speaking through a cone

1:22 The cone gets bigger and there are moving coloured stripes in the barrel of the cone

1:26 The singer then moves the cone to his ear

1:30 The background changes again and the singer is strapped down

1:31 The background is of a chalk board and the chalk shows different roller coasters which changing the singers hair style makes it seem as if the singer is on one of the roller coasters.

1:41 Another background change which is a background of popcorn again in line with the rhythm of the song but also in line with the lyrics

1:43 At this point two bumper cars  appear on either side of the singers head which is again in line with what the singer said

1:45 The two cars bump into the singers neck then the singer has candy floss for hair and the cars and he swing their heads in a synchronised manner.

1:51 The head ends up at the opposite end of the frame as it hangs upside down

1:57 There is a change in the suite that the singer is wearing and the neck falls down to the bottom of the screen

1:59 Flames appear in the background and a white statue like head appears on top of the neck

2:05 A sledgehammer appears and smashes the statue head to reveal the singers head underneath the statue

2:08 There is an ivy leaf background

2:10 Another quick edit shows a bunch of different backgrounds

2:14 Randomly a fish appears at the right side of the singers head

2:15 The fish goes into the singers ear and comes out of the other side like a splash of water and then a bunch of other fish appear on the screen

2:22 There is a blue background and a banana goes into the singers right ear

2:25 The singers hands are shown and there are two cauliflowers and then there is also another green background which kind of shows foliage

2:28 There is a bunch of fruit which encircles the singers head

2:31 The fruit which is moving takes over the whole of the screen and makes the shape of a face then a cherry goes into the originals singers mouth

2:52 The screen is then taken over with moving wooden planks which move around to fit into place a flap opens and shows the singers mouth and the tools move over the wooden plank

3:04 The singer is shown again but he is made of clay

3:09 Here there is an animated clay sequence which is kind of like Wallace and Gromit it has the same kind of quality

3:22 An egg is shown moving from side to side on a stage and there are a couple of sledgehammers that appear.

3:26 A raw chicken appears out of the egg and begins to dance around the stage

3:33 The chicken spins and then 2 chickens appear

3:41 The chicken jumps in the air and the singer appears jumping in a similar way to the chicken

3:45 There are six women who appear on the screen and the singer stands in the middle of the women and they create a kind of V shape

3:47 There is a quick transition sequence and the mans shirts change

3:55 A dance sequence beings

4:10 A television appears in the room where the dancing is taking place

4:15 All the dancers sit in chairs

4:23 A crowd appears and they are all jumping around but this is intercut with a wooden figure which is a piece of furniture dancing

4:29 There is a close up on the mans face

4:34 The singer is dancing around in the middle of a load of dancing furniture

4:42 The man falls asleep in a chair

4:46 There is a black background with lights and a figure who is dressed like the surroundings that moves around

This is a really good video because it is well thought out and well made and this is the kind of video that I am hoping to make.
